RESUMO

The study aimed to compare various toothpastes and mouthwashes on permanent tooth dentin after erosive and abrasive challenges. 130 sound premolars dentin were randomly submitted to an initial erosive challenge and a cycle of erosive and abrasive challenges for five days. The five experimental groups (n = 26) were: (1) Control group (artificial saliva), (2) Elmex erosion protection toothpaste and mouthwash, (3) Vitis anticaries biorepair toothpaste and mouthwash, (4) Oral B Pro-expert toothpaste and Oral B Fluorinse mouthwash, and (5) MI Paste ONE toothpaste and Caphosol mouthwash. Microhardness, surface roughness values, and the topographical characteristics of the dentin surface were assessed. The highest percentage of recovered dentin microhardness (%RDMH) value was observed in groups 2 and 4, followed by groups 5 and 3, respectively. The %RDMH values in groups 2 and 4 did not demonstrate a significant difference (p = 0.855). The highest percentage of improvement in surface roughness was recorded in groups 2 and 4, with no significant differences (p = 0.989). The atomic force microscopy (AFM) findings were consistent with the surface roughness data. The best recovery of dentin microhardness and roughness were measured with the Elmex and Oral B toothpaste and mouthwash, followed by MI Paste ONE toothpaste and Caphosol mouthwash and Vitis anticaries biorepair toothpaste and mouthwash.

The development of remineralizing smart biomaterials is a contemporary approach to caries prevention. The present study aimed at formulation preparation and characterization of a thermoresponsive oral gel based on poloxamer and chitosan loaded with sodium fluoride (NaF) and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) to treat demineralization. The chemical structure and morphology of the formulation were characterized using FTIR and FESEM-EDS tests. Hydrogel texture, rheology, and stability were also examined. The hydrogel was in a sol state at room temperature and became gel after being placed at 37 °C with no significance different in gelation time with the formulation without nHA and NaF as observed by t-test. The FTIR spectrum of nHA/NaF/chitosan-based hydrogel indicated the formation of physical crosslinking without any chemical interactions between the hydrogel components. The FESEM-EDS results demonstrated the uniform distribution of each element within the hydrogel matrix, confirming the successful incorporation of nHA and NaF in the prepared gel. The hardness, hydrogel's adhesiveness, and cohesiveness were 0.9 mJ, 1.7 mJ, and 0.37, respectively, indicating gel stability and the acceptable retention time of hydrogels. The formulation exhibited a non-Newtonian shear-thinning pseudoplastic and thixotropic behavior with absolute physical stability. Within the limitation of in vitro studies, nHA/NaF/chitosan-based in situ forming gel demonstrated favorable properties, which could be trasnsorm into a gel state in oral cavity due to poloxamer and chitosan and can prevent dental caries due to nHA and NaF. We propose this formulation as a promising dental material in tooth surface remineralization.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the in vitro literature on shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of pit and fissure sealant materials in contaminated (water, human, or artificial saliva) and non-contaminated conditions. Methods: PubMed®, Web of Science™, Scopus®, Embase™, and Cochrane Library databases were used as data sources. Of the 974 studies identified, 56 were considered eligible for full-text screening and 32 were selected for data extraction. Results: The meta-analysis demonstrated that contaminated conditions decreased the SBS of the sealants by 4.33 MPa. In the contaminated subgroup analysis, both unfilled (Clinpro™, 3M™) and filled (FluroShield®, Dentsply) resin-based sealants achieved a similar SBS (P=0.82). Regarding the outcome measurements, extensive methodological heterogeneity was found among the studies for SBS measurements (I 2 equals greater than or equal to 84 percent; P<0.001), whereas homogeneity was found for microleakage (I 2 equals 84 percent; P=0.85). When evaluating resin-based sealants, the level of microleakage in the contaminated and non- contaminated groups was not significantly different (P=0.1). Conclusion: Surface contamination decreases the bond strength between contaminated enamel and both unfilled and filled resin-based sealants, which affects the clinical effectiveness of sealants.

Background: Pediatricians have an important role to play in motivating and instructing parents on oral health in children. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge of, attitude to, and behavior regarding oral health care in children among pediatricians and students in the pediatric field in Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study included all students in the pediatric field (those who had started a residency or fellowship) and practicing pediatricians in provincial centers and universities (61 setting centers) throughout Iran in the course of 2021. Participants completed an online questionnaire assessing details of the parameters of knowledge of, attitude to, and behavior toward oral health for each individual. A convenience sampling technique was used to gather the study sample. All data were coded for each of the parameters. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)/Tukey and Pearson's correlation tests and path analysis. Results: Out of 582 participants who visited the website, a total of 217 completed the entire questionnaire (participation rate of 37.2%). On the attitude parameter, 84.8% of participants scored above 75% of the possible attainable score, while only 37.9% and 48.1% of them had adequate knowledge and behavior for the possible score, respectively. Specialists had a higher mean score on behavior and knowledge than residents (P=0.001). There was a significant correlation between the scores on attitude and behavior (r=0.42, P<0.001), attitude and knowledge (r=0.19, P=0.005), and behavior and knowledge (r=0.25, P<0.001). Nearly all of the participants, 216 (99.5%), felt the need for the principles of dentistry to be included in the curriculum. Conclusions: Pediatricians showed a favorable attitude to oral health, but their knowledge of and behavior in the field was inadequate. Improvement of pediatricians' interest and performance in oral health in children should be encouraged through the inclusion of these parameters in the curriculum for students of the pediatric field. Implementing training programs for practical pediatricians or incorporating independent theoretical and clinical courses offered by pediatric dentists in dental school departments into the field curriculum of the students in the pediatric field is recommended.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to assess the impact of application of fluoridated- 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) with or without potassium iodide (KI) on silver diamine fluoride (SDF)-treated enamel surface in the primary teeth. METHODS: After stained-remineralized caries lesions (s-RCLs) creation, 96 teeth were randomly allocated to four experimental groups: Group 1:SDF-treated enamel followed by 8-h/day application of 10% CP for 2 weeks; Group 2: SDF-treated enamel followed by 15-min/day application of 10% CP for 3 weeks; Group 3: SDF + KI-treated enamel followed by 8-h/day application of 10% CP for 2 weeks; and Group 4: SDF + KI-treated enamel followed by 15-min/day application of 10% CP for 3 weeks. Enamel microhardness (EMH) test (n = 12) and spectrophotometric color assessment (n = 12) was performed at four stages: baseline (intact enamel), demineralized enamel, aged remineralized-stained enamel, and after final intervention. Sixteen samples were used for SEM evaluation. Data were analyzed with the paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post-hoc test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: EMH values in all groups showed significant decrease after demineralization (all, p < 0.00001). All samples showed complete recovery of EMH values (%REMH) after SDF application compared to demineralization (%REMHSDF) (p = 0.971). Bleaching caused a slight decrease in %REMH for all groups. However, the differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.979). SEM findings revealed no changes in enamel porosity after bleaching. Bleaching application ameliorated the discoloration in all groups (all, p < 0.00001). All samples in Groups 2 and 4 had significantly lighter color after 21 days as compared to 14-day exposure to the bleaching material (both, p < 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS: SDF application on demineralized primary tooth enamel completely recovered enamel microhardness. 10% carbamide peroxide effectively bleached SDF stain without causing significant decrease in EMH values. Color improvement was more evident with the use of KI immediately after SDF application. Both 15-min and 8-h application of fluoridated CP resulted in statistically similar color enhancement in primary teeth.

To determine the penetration depth and enamel microhardness (EMH) of an infiltrant resin and two fissure sealants in primary teeth with early enamel lesions. We randomly divided 174 sound teeth into six groups (n = 29): (1) phosphoric acid (PA) + Clinpro, (2) PA + Aegis, (3) Icon, (4) hydrochloric acid (HCl) + Clinpro, (5) HCl + Aegis, and (6) control. Percentage penetration (%PP) was analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (n = 15). EMH was measured (n = 12), and the percentage of EMH recovery (%REMH) was calculated. Twelve samples were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). All data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis and one-way ANOVA tests (p < 0.05). Groups 3 and 4 showed the highest %PP (all, p < 0.05). Icon application led to significantly higher %REMH compared to the others (p < 0.05). Groups 2 and 5 showed the lowest reduction in %REMH after pH-cycling. Application of Icon and Clinpro with HCl pretreatment showed the greatest %PP. pH-cycling led to a decrease in %REMH for all of the materials, although this effect was lower in teeth treated with Aegis.

The aim of this study was to assess the remineralization of enamel caries lesions using the self-assembling peptide P11 -4 associated with different materials. Artificial early enamel lesions were prepared on 154 primary teeth. The samples were randomly divided into eight groups: (1) control, (2) P11 -4, (3) fluoridate toothpaste (FT), (4) P11 -4 + FT, (5) casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), (6) P11 -4 + CPP-ACP, (7) fluoridate bioactive glass toothpaste (BT), and (8) P11 -4 + BT. The surface enamel microhardness (EMH) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) of the teeth were then measured at the baseline, after demineralization, and after 28 days of remineralization. The enamel surfaces were assessed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The data were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (p < .05). EMH after demineralization was significantly lower than the baseline value (p < .001). The interventions led to an enhanced percentage of EMH recovery (%REMH), which was higher in Groups 6 and 7. There was no significant difference between Groups 3 and 4. Groups 1 and 2 had the lowest %REMH. The mean calcium/phosphate weight percentage ratio of P11 -4 was significantly lower than the others (p < .001). The FESEM and AFM images revealed mineral deposition on the eroded enamel and reductions in surface roughness in Groups 5 and 7.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the proportion of microleakage (PM), shear bond strength (SBS), and the fissure sealant (FS) interface by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in three kinds of FS when the enamel surfaces were contaminated with saliva. METHODS: 198 sound third molar teeth were randomly divided into three pretreatment condition groups (n = 66): dry, saliva contamination removed by cotton pellet, or saliva removed by air-drying. A resin-based FS (Clinpro™), amorphous calcium phosphate-containing FS (Aegis®), or glass ionomer-based FS (Fuji Triage®) was applied on the treated enamel, and PM and SBS were assessed. Two specimens from each group were observed with SEM. p values < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Glass ionomer-based FS showed the highest PM in all three surface conditions (p values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant). No significant difference in PM was observed between resin-based FS and amorphous calcium phosphate-containing FS (p > 0.05). Resin-based FS showed significantly greater SBS in all three surface conditions compared to glass ionomer-based FS. SEM observations showed that saliva contamination led to gaps at the enamel-sealant interface. CONCLUSION: Neither cotton pellet-drying nor air-drying effectively removed saliva from the contaminated enamel surface. Glass ionomer-based FS showed the highest PM and the lowest SBS in contaminated and noncontaminated conditions. The highest SBS was obtained with resin-based FS.

BACKGROUND: Intracanal disinfection is a critical, yet challenging goal for long-term success in regenerative-based treatments. This in-vitro study aimed to assess the release profile of triple antibiotic- eluting Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin (I-PRF) constructs in 28 days. METHODS: I-PRF scaffolds containing triple antibiotic mixture [Metronidazole (MET), Ciprofloxacin (CIP), and Minocycline (MINO)] by immersion (group one), I-PRF scaffolds containing triple antibiotic mixture by integration (group two), and antibiotic-free I-PRF scaffolds (group three) were fabricated. The antibiotic release from the scaffolds was measured using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) (the mobile phase of 0.1% formic acid and methanol (35:65 v/v), a C18 analytical column (150 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) at a flow rate of 0.7 mL/min, at 25ºC) at days 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28. RESULTS: Retention times for MINO, CIP, and MET were achieved as 2.3, 2.6, and 3.1 min, respectively. The maximum UV absorbance values for CIP, MET, and MINO were 268 nm, 278 nm, and 350 nm, respectively. The results of the first group showed burst release within the first 24 hours followed by sustained maintenance of all three antibiotics up to 14 days. MINO and MET were still detectable in the third week. The second group could not sustainably release the antibiotics. CONCLUSION: The developed method for the simultaneous identification and quantification of each antibiotic in I-PRF was sensitive and quick. Overall, group one could take up the antibiotics in adequate quantities and then subsequently release them over the study period.

To assess- the release of calcium and phosphate ions from a fissure sealant containing amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), and to determine the re-release capacity of these ions when charged with a solution containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP). Nine blocks of ACP resin-based sealant were prepared and immersed in three solutions at different pH (4.0, 5.5, 7.0), and calcium and phosphate ion release was measured with ion chromatography at 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after immersion. Sixty days after immersion, each block was charged with CPP-ACP solution in three 7-day cycles to investigate the re-release of these ions, which was measured on days 1, 3, and 7. No difference was observed in initial calcium ion release at pH 4.0 and pH 5.5. At both values, ion release was significantly higher than at pH 7.0 (p<0.001). Initial phosphate release was significantly different among the three pH values (p<0.001). After re-charging the specimens, calcium ion re-release was greater than phosphate ion release. Initial ion release from ACP resin-based sealant was greatest at the lowest pH. Ion release decreased with time. As the number of recharge cycles increased, ion re-release also improved. Phosphate ion re-release required more recharge cycles than calcium ion re-release.

This study was conducted to evaluate whether antibacterial pretreatment irrigation with silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has any effect on bond strength of fiber posts cemented with three types of resin cements in root canal space. Fifty-four endodontically treated maxillary central incisor roots were prepared for fiber post (FRC Postec Plus NO.3, Ivoclar Vivadent) cementation and divided into nine groups in terms of three cement types and two pretreatments with silver antibacterial agents. The cements were as follows: an etch-and-rinse cement (ER, Excite DSC/Variolink N), a self-etch cement (SE, ED Primer/Panavia F2.0), and a self-adhesive cement (SA, Panavia SA Luting Plus). For each cement, the control group was with no treatment and two experimental groups were with SNPs and SDF treatments that were used after acid-etching for ER cement and after EDTA treatment for SE and SA cements. After fiber post cementation, each bonded root was horizontally sectioned into 1-mm thickness microslices to create two slices for each root region (apical, middle and coronal) and underwent push-out bond strength (PBS) test. Data in MPa were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p=0.05). The interaction of the pretreatment type and cement type was significant (p<0.001). SNPs and SDF significantly increased PBS with ER cement (p≤0.04). This positive effect was also marginally significant for SDF with SE cement (p=0.049). For SA cement, SNPs showed a significant positive effect, but SDF had a significant adverse effect on PBS (p<0.001). The effect of pretreatment with silver antibacterial agents prior to adhesive cementation of fiber posts depends on the resin cement used. Contrary to SNPs with beneficial or no significant effect on bonding for all cements, SDF exhibited a deleterious effect with self-adhesive cement.

Resumo Este estudo foi conduzido para avaliar se a irrigação de pré-tratamento antibacteriano com nanopartículas de prata (SNPs) e fluoreto de diamina de prata (SDF) tem algum efeito na resistência de união de pinos de fibra cimentados com três tipos de cimentos resinosos no espaço do canal radicular. Cinquenta e quatro raízes de incisivos centrais superiores tratadas endodonticamente foram preparadas para cimentação de pino de fibra (FRC Postec Plus NO.3, Ivoclar Vivadent) e divididas em nove grupos em termos de três tipos de cimento e dois pré-tratamentos com agentes antibacterianos de prata. Os cimentos foram os seguintes: um cimento etch-and-rinse (ER, Excite DSC / Variolink N), um cimento autocondicionante (SE, ED Primer / Panavia F2.0) e um cimento autoadesivo (SA, Panavia SA Luting Plus). Para cada cimento, o grupo controle foi sem tratamento e dois grupos experimentais foram com SNPs e SDF tratamentos que foram usados após o condicionamento ácido para o cimento ER e após o tratamento com EDTA para os cimentos SE e SA. Após a cimentação do pilar de fibra, cada raiz ligada foi seccionada horizontalmente em microclimas de 1 mm de espessura para criar duas fatias para cada região da raiz (apical, média e coronal) e submetida ao teste de resistência de união por push-out (PBS). Os dados em MPa foram analisados ​​com ANOVA de dois fatores e teste de Tukey (p = 0,05). A interação do tipo de pré-tratamento e tipo de cimento foi significativa (p<0,001). SNPs e SDF aumentaram significativamente o PBS com cimento ER (p≤0,04). Este efeito positivo também foi marginalmente significativo para SDF com cimento SE (p = 0,049). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of Er:YAG etching on topography, microstructure, compressive strength, and shear bond strength (SBS) of All-Bond Universal adhesive to mineral trioxide aggregate-Angelus (AMTA) and Biodentine (BD). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Sixty cylindrical specimens of each cement (AMTA and BD) in five groups were prepared and stored for 72 h. The control groups were non-etched, and four other groups were acid-etched and laser-etched with a pulse energy of 60, 80, or 100 mJ, followed by compressive strength testing. Surface micromorphology and topography were evaluated. Similar groups were bonded using All-Bond Universal with self-etch and etch-and-rinse (acid-etch) approaches, and laser-etch 60, 80, and 100 mJ, and SBS was tested. Data were analyzed using two-way and one-way ANOVA and the Bonferroni post hoc tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: BD had a significantly higher compressive strength and SBS (except for laser-etch 100) compared to AMTA, regardless of the etching method (p < 0.001). Acid etching and laser etching 100 of both cements and laser etching 80 of BD alone produced a significantly lower compressive strength than that for the other groups. Contrary to BD, for AMTA, all the treatments significantly increased SBS compared to that of the self-etch group. CONCLUSIONS: Etching of AMTA was needed for stronger bonding; laser etching with 60 or 80 mJ without compromising compressive strength was recommended. Etching not only did not improve bonding ability of BD, but it also negatively affected the strength of BD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: To achieve successful combined calcium silicate cement-resin material restoration, an adequate bond between the materials is mandatory. This might be provided with the ultramild adhesive through laser etching without compromising compressive strength, depending on cement composition and laser energy level used.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study was aimed at evaluating the antibacterial property of an injectable platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF) scaffold containing triple antibiotic mixture against an Actinomyces naeslundii (A. naeslundii) and Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) biofilm in an infected immature root canal model. METHODS: A dual-species biofilm was inoculated inside the root canals via a series of centrifugal cycles. The samples were allocated to three experimental groups (i.e., G1: triple antibiotic mixture, G2: I-PRF containing triple antibiotic mixture, and G3: antibiotic-free I-PRF scaffold) and two control groups (G4: seven-day biofilm untreated and G5: bacteria-free untreated). RESULTS: Bacterial gene quantification change and the overall reduction of live bacteria were evaluated. The highest antibacterial activity against A. naeslundii belonged to G2. However, G1 and G2 had similar antibacterial property against E. faecalis (p value = 0.814). In general, experimental groups revealed higher levels of antibacterial activity against E. faecalis than against A. naeslundii (p value < 0.001). Notably, G2 could dramatically decrease the number of live bacteria up to near 92%. CONCLUSIONS: The current study provides insight into the antibacterial property of an antibiotic-eluting I-PRF scaffold against a dual-species biofilm colonized inside the root canal. The fabricated scaffold contains not only the antibiotics but also the growth factors, which favor the regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Although acid-etching could increase enamel bond strength of self-adhesive (SA) cements, it may lead to negative effect on dentin. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of shortening of phosphoric acid pre-etching duration on enamel/ dentin shear bond strength (SBS) and interfacial microstructure of Panavia SA Luting Plus (PASA) and Bifix SE (BXSE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: For both enamel and dentin, effect of pre-etching time was significant (p<0.001); however, effect of cement brand and the interaction of two factors was significant only for dentin (p≤0.008). Three pre-etching times increased SBS of both cements to enamel and BXSE to dentin. In case of dentin SBS of PASA, this improvement was significant only for 5 and 10 seconds (p<0.001). Adding acid-etching in the three times to both cements similarly improved interfacial adaptation, particularly for enamel. RESULTS: The evaluations of the biofilm elimination showed results that indicate that the 4% sodium hypochlorite group with positive pressure irrigation presented significant differences with the group that had irrigation with sodium hypochlorite activated with XP-endo Finisher and the chlorhexidine groups to 2% (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Interfacial bond strength and adaptation of SA cements used in this study were improved following addition of enamel/dentin etching step for a short time. BACKGROUND: The management of noncavitated caries lesions before sealant therapy is a clinical challenge when the tooth needs sealant application. Sealing noncavitated carious lesions in pits and fissures may lead to failure of the fissure sealant (FS) due to incomplete sealing. Therefore the use of remineralizing agents such as nanoparticles has been suggested. This study investigated the ability of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nano-HA) to remineralize enamel, and their effect on sealant microleakage and shear bond strength (SBS). METHODS: A total of 192 third molars were demineralized and pretreated with two concentrations of nano-HA with and without sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), followed by phosphoric acid etching and resin FS application. The study groups were 1) etching + FS, 2) etching + nano-HA 0.15% + FS, 3) etching + nano-HA 0.03% + FS, 4) etching + mixture of nano-HA 0.15% and SHMP 0.05% + FS, 5) etching + mixture of nano-HA 0.03% + SHMP 0.01% + FS. The laboratory tests included microleakage in 50 teeth, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluation in 10 samples, and SBS in 100 samples. Enamel remineralization changes were evaluated in 32 teeth with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). RESULTS: Nano-HA enhanced the SBS to remineralized enamel in a large percentage of nanoparticles. Mean SBS in group 2 was significantly greater than in groups 1, 3 and 4 (all P < 0.05). SBS was related to nano-HA concentration: nano-HA 0.15% yielded greater SBS (16.8 ± 2.7) than the 0.03% concentration (14.2 ± 2.1). However, its effect on microleakage was not significant. Nano-HA with or without SHMP led to enhanced enamel remineralization; however, the Calcium (Ca)/Phosphate (P) weight percent values did not differ significantly between the groups (P > 0.05). SEM images showed that SHMP did not affect sealant penetration into the deeper parts of fissures. FESEM images showed that adding SHMP led to increased nanoparticle dispersal on the tooth surface and less cluster formation. CONCLUSIONS: The ultraconservative approach (combining nano-HA 0.15% and SHMP) and FS may be considered a minimal intervention in dentistry to seal demineralized enamel pits and fissures.

Purpose: To compare the accuracy of dental age (DA) estimates in children using the Demirjian method and the proportion of root resorption in primary teeth.Methods: Panoramic images from 497 children aged three to 11.99 years were evaluated. Individuals were classified in five groups of two-year age intervals. Seven permanent teeth in the left mandible were scored based on diagrams developed by Demirjian. The proportion of root resorption was determined in the primary mandibular left canine and primary second molar, and age was estimated according to the length of root resorption (one quarter, one half, three quarters).Results: The Demirjian method tended to overestimate DA, except for the 10- to 11.99 year-old category in girls. The greatest overestimation was in four- to 5.99 year-old children. Except for the youngest category, the difference between DA and chronological age, according to the Demirjian method, decreased with increasing age in both sexes. The root resorption method tended to underestimate age, except for canine root resorption in boys.Conclusion: Estimated DA was closest to chronological age when the former was based on canine root resorption. Both the Demirjian and root resorption methods were effective and can be used to determine age in children.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to evaluate the adhesion of Scotchbond Universal Adhesive to primary tooth dentin by measuring shear bond strength (SBS) and observing morphological changes with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro study, a total of 60 primary canine teeth were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 12). The study groups were (1) Phosphoric acid etching + Adper Single Bond 2 (control), (2) phosphoric acid etching + Scotchbond Universal (etch-and-rinse), (3) Scotchbond Universal (self-etch), (4) phosphoric acid etching + Scotchbond Universal + resin, and (5) Scotchbond Universal + resin. Composite cylinders were built on the tooth surface, and 10 samples in each group were selected for SBS testing and identification of the failure modes. Two samples from each group were observed by SEM. One-way ANOVA and Tukey honestly significant difference post hoc test were used for data analysis P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The results showed that SBS in Group 1 was significantly lower than in Groups 2, 3, and 4 (all P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between Groups 2 and 3 (P = 0.98), or between Groups 3 and 4 (P = 0.97). There was no significant difference between Groups 2 and 4 (P = 0.999) or between Groups 1 and 5 (P = 0.156). Mixed and cohesive failures were more frequent in Groups 2, 3 and 4. SEM observations showed that applying phosphoric acid to the dentin before Scotchbond Universal adhesive resulted in more open dentinal tubules and more resin tag impregnation. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in SBS between Scotchbond Universal Adhesive in etch-and-rinse and self-etching modes. The SBS of Scotchbond Universal Adhesive in etch-and-rinse mode was greater than Adper Single Bond 2.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of sealants is dependent upon their adhesion to enamel surface. The aim of the study was to evaluate the sealing ability of a pit and fissure sealant used with a universal adhesive (etch-and-rinse vs. self-etch modes) when the site is contaminated with saliva. Adhesive properties were evaluated as microleakage and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 72 mandibular third molars were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=12). Occlusal pits and fissures were sealed with an unfilled resin fissure sealant (FS) material with or without saliva contamination. The groups included: 1) phosphoric acid etching + FS (control), 2) phosphoric acid etching + Scotchbond Universal (etch-and-rinse) + FS, 3) phosphoric acid etching + saliva + Scotchbond Universal (etch-and-rinse) + FS, 4) Scotchbond Universal (self-etching) + FS,5) Scotchbond Universal (self-etching) + saliva + FS, and 6) Scotchbond Universal (self-etching) + saliva + Scotchbond Universal + FS. After thermocycling, the teeth were placed in 0.5% fuchsin, sectioned, and evaluated by digital microscopy. Two samples from each group were also observed by SEM. The data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests for a significance of p<0.05. RESULTS: There were significant differences among groups. Groups 1,2 and 4 showed the least microleakage, with no significant differences among groups. Saliva contamination led to increased microleakage and gap formation in SEM images in groups 3, 5 and 6. CONCLUSIONS: The fissure sealing ability of the universal adhesive in etch-and-rinse or self-etch modes was similar to that of conventional acid etching. Saliva contamination had a negative effect on sealant adhesion to pretreated enamel. Key words:Pit and fissure sealant, Universal adhesive, Saliva.
